Traditional fixed metal braces
If you’re thinking of getting braces, traditional fixed metal braces are probably what first comes to mind. These braces use a combination of metal brackets, archwires and ligatures (elastic bands) to straighten your teeth. Although visible, they are comfortable to wear and do the job well, no matter how complex or minor your orthodontic requirements are.
Clear ceramic braces
Traditional metal braces are one of the most cost-effective and affordable orthodontic appliances, but some patients are hesitant to proceed with treatment because of how noticeable the braces are. That’s where clear ceramic braces come in. They look and work much the same way as the original braces, except for one clear difference – the brackets are made of a ceramic material. This material can be clear or tooth-coloured which makes for a more aesthetically pleasing treatment option. In other words, they’re not as visible but they still get results that are!
Self-ligating braces
A third option when it comes to the traditional type of braces is self-ligating braces. This method uses brackets with a sliding mechanism, that allows the archwire to move as your teeth do. This means there is less friction and no need for elastic bands, which are used with traditional braces to help apply the gentle force needed to guide your teeth into position.
Lingual braces
One of the most discreet types of braces available are lingual braces. What makes them discreet is that they’re attached to the back surface of your teeth. Not only does this make them a great choice if you’re worried about wearing braces, they’re also good for your teeth as there is less risk of decalcification or the potential for unsightly marks on the front surface of your teeth. Incognito is a well-known brand of lingual braces.
Invisalign aligners
Invisalign aligners have earned the name invisible braces. Although they don’t look like braces in the traditional sense, the clear plastic aligners still achieve great teeth straightening results. Instead of brackets and archwires providing gentle force to move your teeth into position, Invisalign aligners look like thin sports mouthguards and fit snugly over your teeth to straighten them. These aligners are so discreet that people around you won’t even know you’re wearing them.
